British Karate Federation Championships 2009     06-09-2009
BKF Championships, Edinburgh, Scotland 5th-6th September, 2009
This years Championship was organised by the Scottish National Governing Body and was held at the Meadowbank Stadium in Edinburgh. The BKF is headed by Sensei Terry Connell who is also head of Shitokai Scotland. Sensei Brian, Senpai Dona and Penny (who went to officiate) took three students; Lisa Marfell (16), Melissa Clayton (16) and Naomi Marshall (13). The competition was held over two days. On the Saturday all events for ages 14 years and over took place, while events for the 13 years and below followed on the Sunday.
Lisa and Mel were in the 16-17 years girls kata. Mel lost in the first round but Lisa got through four rounds before losing in the semi finals. Competing her way through the repercharge, Lisa eventually lost to the eventual 3rd place medalist, but a great effort from both girls
.
The Kumite followed and Naomi was entered into an age group above hers in the 14-15 years girls (+54kg). Winning her first match against an England National Team member 8-2, Naomi was off to a great start. Winning two more rounds, Naomi reached the semis before loosing to a finalist. However, Naomi worked her way back through the repo charge, to secure a bronze medal, our first ever placing at these championships. Well done.

Lisa and Mel both entered the 16-17 yrs girls (-59kg and +47kg). Lisa lost her first round, but Mel (+47kg the lightweights!) had a bye and went straight into the final to secure a silver medal. Next up were the team Kumite, 16-17 yrs girls. All three girls took part and fought through 2 rounds to emerge as British Team Kumite Champions. Well done to all three girls. It was a long day, finishing at 11pm, but everyone slept soundly knowing they had given their best and were rewarded with medals.
Sunday started with an 9.00am referees meeting and the events kicked off with kata. Naomi had entered into the kata 12-13years girls and won her first round, but went out in the next. In 12 E13 years kumite Naomi fougt through several rounds and reached the quarter finals before loosing, just missing out on a possible medal position. Next Naomi entered the 10-13 years open event (40 entered), having won three matches and into the quarter finals she lost 1-0 to gain another medal position.

Congratulations to the KSE Members Lisa, Mel and Naomi on their successful weekend, and also to Sensei Brian who achieved his British Kata and Kumite Judges qualification. Senpai Dona gained her Referee Class BEnational qualification, while Penny, who officiated for a total of 18 hours, gained some valuable experience, and received some excellent comments from Chief Referee, Mr Chiko Mbakwe.
