Fumio Demura sensei was born in Yokohama, Japan on the 15th September 1938. He began his formal martial arts training at the age of 10, initially in kendo and a short time later, karate under Asano sensei. Whilst in high school, Demura sensei studied aikido and judo. His interest in the martial arts continued to grow and while studying at Nihon University, Tokyo, Demura sensei began studying various Okinawan weapons of self0defence collectively known as ‘kobudo’ (ancient warrior ways).

In 1950 Fumio Demura began training in the Itosu-Kai group headed by Master Ryusho Sakagami sensei, a direct student of Mabuni Kenwa, the founder of Shito Ryu karate-Do. In 1956 Demura sensei received his black belt in karate and a year later won the East Japan championships.

Always keen to expand his knowledge of all things budo, Fumio Demura began the study of Iaido (way of drawing the sword / katana) under Ryusho Sakagami sensei. In 1959, Demura sensei received instruction in kobudo from Shinken Taira. Shinken Taira, a student of Gichin Funakoshi and Master Moden Yabuki, the founder of "Ryukyu Kobujutsu Kenkyu-Kai’ was well renowned for his expertise in kobudo. So through many years dedicated study Demura sensei became expert in many forms of armed and unarmed combat.
