Welsh Open Championships 2009 - 10-10-2009    
Only 3 from the SMA squad attended the Welsh Open - namely Luke Jones -Naomi Marshall and Lisa Marfell.
The event took place at the Welsh Institute of Sport - Sophia Gardens- Cardiff.
First to compete was Lisa who was our only kata competitor. Lisa performed katas Bassai Dai and Matsumura Bassai and secured a bronze medal. Later in kumite Lisa also secured a Silver losing to a seasoned member of the national England squad.
Luke also placed in the medals securing a bronze in the kumite. Naomi unfortunately lost by 1 point in the opening round of her event. Our congratulations go to the trio for their efforts and to Mr & Mrs Jones for their continued support.

KSE Club Championships 2009 - 04-10-2009    
More than fifty competitors met for the first KSE Club Championships at the STR Sports Centre - Gloucester. Among them students from Abbergavenny - Ellesmere Port - Hay on Wye - Hereford - Gloucester and Cheltenham. Events started with junior grade kata and pairs kata. This was followed by junior grade kumite then senior pairs kata. Lastly the seniors displayed their kata and then kumite.

Kyu Grade Exam - 27-09-2009    
STR dojo was the setting for the September Kyu grade exam and over 50 students attended the event. Josh Barlow achieved the highest in the Peewee grade exam with 81% and Kiren Emery achieved 9th kyu with 79% which is fantastic for his first exam - well done.

Harvey Foster also did very well achieveing 73% on his 8th kyu exam and showed great ability. Marcus Kong and Connor Coleman both achieved 7th kyu with only 1% between them. Club mate James Gallagher secured the highest mark in his catagory achieveing 6th kyu.

Ken Yu Kai Championships 2009 - 27-09-2009    
Naomi Marshall and Luke Jones travelled to Manchester to take part in the 2nd KYK Championships. The one day event attracted over 400 competitors from home and abroad. Terry Pottage - the head of KYK commented on how pleased he was to see so many quality competitors in attendance.
Unfortunately Noami did not place in the medals but club mate Luke secured a bronze medal in the kumite. Our congratulations go to them both for their efforts and especially Luke for his achievement. Also, our thanks to lukes parents Becky and Allen for being taxi - coach and supporters for the duo. Many thanks and well done to all!

British Karate Federation Championships 2009 - 06-09-2009    
BKF Championships, Edinburgh, Scotland 5th-6th September, 2009
This year’s Championship was organised by the Scottish National Governing Body and was held at the Meadowbank Stadium in Edinburgh. The BKF is headed by Sensei Terry Connell who is also head of Shitokai Scotland. Sensei Brian, Senpai Dona and Penny (who went to officiate) took three students; Lisa Marfell (16), Melissa Clayton (16) and Naomi Marshall (13). The competition was held over two days. On the Saturday all events for ages 14 years and over took place, while events for the 13 years and below followed on the Sunday.

Central England Open Championships 2009 - 12-07-2009    
A team of 9 SMA members attended the 13th Central England Championships at the University of Wolverhampton - Walsall - W.Mids.
The team were coached by Dona - Alison and Danielle and supported by their parents who provided the great photos you can see below - thank you!

Kyu Grade Exam Success - 28-06-2009    
Forty seven students came together at the STR sports centre Gloucester to be tested for their next Kyu grade. A 100% success rate was achieved due to the excellent preparation made by all students. The senior grades in particular endured a two and a half hour exam in a very hot and humid dojo. Their hard work and effort paid off however and our congratulations go out to all who took part - well done from SMA! View

Longlevens School Fete Karate Demonstration - 20-06-2009    
Having been invited by Longlevens Junior school to take part in their summer fete, a number of students offered their services. Below are some photos courtesy of Mr Angel - many thanks. II FKSM CHAMPIONSHIPS 2009 - 14-06-2009    
The 2nd Federation of Karate-do Shitokai Murayama Championships were held at the Crystal Leisure Centre, Stourbridge - W.Midlands. Of the 85 entrys the SMA had a team of 33 and brought home 31 medals in total including 8 Gold - 7 Silver and 16 Bronze medals! View
